The America’s Cup 2021 series is finally back on Saturday following Auckland’s snap lockdown and a bitter dispute between America’s Cup event organisers and the Challenger of Record Luna Rossa.
Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa have started the America’s Cup early with a momentary drag race on the Waitematā Harbour. With Auckland at alert Level 3 due to the re-emergence of Covid-19 in the community, the America’s Cup match – which was set to kick off this weekend – has been pushed back to next Wednesday at the earliest, pending the Government’s decision about whether to extend lockdown in the city.
Under COVID-19 Alert: Level 2 or 1, the race schedule will remain as planned with two races per day – Wednesday 10th, Friday 12th, Saturday 13th, Sunday 14th, Monday 15th and each day after that. The current schedule has racing every day until either the Defender Emirates Team New Zealand or the Challenger Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli reaches 7 wins.
The America’s Cup will head out to course E near Waiheke Island, though there’s a good chance there will be a delay in the action getting underway. WATCH LIVE AMERICA’s CUP.

Team New Zealand vs Luna Rossa 2021 Prada Cup Preview
The America’s Cup was founded in 1851 by the Royal Yacht Squadron, a club based on the Isle of Wight in southern England. The trophy is so named after the winner of that first race, the New York Yacht Club’s America. Due to this, the 1870 race – when the New York Yacht Club defeated the Royal Thames Yacht Club – is considered the first America’s Cup.
Also racing for the Italians is three-time Olympian Francesco Bruni. The 47-year-old made his Olympic debut at Atlanta 1996 where he finished 12th in the laser class. His attempts at Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 did not yield a medal but his depth of experience will be an asset out at sea.
Bruni is very familiar with his current team, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, as he first raced with them back in 2003 when it was known as Luna Rossa Challenge.
Ainslie has been racing in the America’s Cup since 2005 and brings with him a wealth of experience. He was integral in Oracle Team USA‘s remarkable turnaround victory against Emirates Team New Zealand in 2013.
